Go-to-Market department

Business development and partnerships, run as a department

Partnerships come up in every planning meeting and get worked on by nobody, because the people who should own them are busy closing direct deals. Nexoryl runs the groundwork as a managed department: researching and prioritising partners, opening conversations, onboarding the ones that sign and tracking what each produces, remotely and in your CRM.

Overview

What is business development?

Business development is the work of finding and building relationships that create growth outside the direct sales motion: resellers, referral partners, technology integrations, distribution channels and strategic alliances.

It overlaps with sales but runs on a longer cycle. A partner deal can take months to sign, and its value comes from what the partner produces afterwards, not from the signature itself.

Nexoryl model

What does Nexoryl's Business Development department do?

It runs your partner pipeline, first research through to an active partnership: defining which partners fit, finding and qualifying them, opening conversations, supporting onboarding and tracking each partner's contribution.

Direct deals stay with Sales, and prospect data for direct outreach comes from Lead Generation. Business Development focuses on the partners who sell, refer or integrate on your behalf.

Responsible for
Partner profiling, target mapping, research, outreach, meeting coordination, onboarding materials, partner enablement and pipeline reporting.
Not included
Signing agreements, final commercial negotiation, legal review, and in-person meetings or trade show attendance.
Connects to
Sales, Lead Generation, Marketing and Legal & Compliance for contract administration.

The partner pipeline

How a partner moves from a name on a list to revenue.

Six stages, tracked in your CRM. Most stalled programmes stall between stage five and six.

  1. 01

    Define

Which partner types fit your model, and what a good partner looks like.

  2. 02

    Map

A researched list of target partners, scored on fit and reach.

  3. 03

    Approach

Personalised outreach and first conversations by email, LinkedIn and video.

  4. 04

    Qualify

Mutual fit confirmed: shared customers, capacity, incentives and commitment.

  5. 05

    Onboard

Agreement signed by you, then materials, training and a first joint plan.

  6. 06

    Activate

Ongoing partner management, joint pipeline reviews and contribution tracking.

Why programmes stall

Four reasons partner programmes go quiet.

The common failure isn't finding partners. It's what happens, or doesn't, after they say yes.

01

No clear partner profile

Shows up as
Conversations with anyone who replies, most of whom were never going to sell for you.
We look at
Your best existing customers and partners, and what they have in common.
What changes
A written partner profile used to score every target before outreach.
02

Signed, then silent

Shows up as
Partners who sign an agreement and never register a deal.
We look at
What happened after signature: onboarding, materials and a first joint plan.
What changes
A structured onboarding and an activation plan for every new partner.
03

Partner pipeline in someone's inbox

Shows up as
Nobody can say how many partner conversations are live or what they're worth.
We look at
How partner activity is recorded today, if it's recorded at all.
What changes
Partner stages tracked in your CRM, with a monthly review.
04

Channel conflict

Shows up as
Partners and your sales team chasing the same accounts.
We look at
Rules of engagement, deal registration and territory definitions.
What changes
Deal registration rules agreed with Sales before partners go live.

How remote delivery works

How a business development engagement runs.

Nexoryl opens and qualifies conversations under messaging you approve. Commitments are only ever made by your team.

  1. Step 1: Discovery

Your goals, current partners, products and where partners could realistically help.

  2. Step 2: Profile and targets

Partner profile agreed, target list researched and scored, outreach messaging approved by you.

  3. Step 3: Outreach

Conversations opened and qualified; meetings booked into your calendar or held by our lead by video.

  4. Step 4: Handover for decisions

Qualified partners presented with a summary. Agreements and terms are decided and signed by you.

  5. Step 5: Onboard and manage

New partners onboarded and supported, with the partner pipeline reviewed monthly.

Measurement

How a business development department is measured.

Partner revenue arrives late, so earlier measures show whether the programme is on track.

Pipeline

  • Partners at each stage
  • Qualified partner conversations
  • Time from first contact to signature

Activation

  • Partners with a registered deal
  • Time to first deal
  • Onboarding completed

Contribution

  • Partner-sourced revenue
  • Partner-influenced pipeline
  • Deal registration volume

Programme health

  • Active versus dormant partners
  • Partner feedback
  • Agreement renewals

These are measurement categories, not promised figures.

Who does the work

The people building your partner channel.

Three roles cover most programmes. Larger ones add analysts per market rather than more management.

Business Development Lead

Owns the partner profile, qualified conversations and the monthly pipeline review.

Partner Research Analyst

Maps and scores target partners, and prepares the briefs used in outreach.

Partner Operations Coordinator

Runs onboarding administration, deal registration and CRM upkeep.

A good fit when

  • Partnerships are in the plan but nobody has time to work on them
  • You have partners who signed and never produced anything
  • You're entering a new market and need channel partners there
  • Partner activity isn't tracked anywhere you can report on

Probably not the right fit when

  • You need someone to attend trade shows or visit partners in person
  • You need a contract lawyer
  • You expect partner revenue within weeks of starting

Ways to start

Three ways to begin.

Partner mapping on its own is often enough to show whether a channel is worth building.

01

Partner mapping

A partner profile, scored target list and recommended approach for one partner type, delivered as a scoped project.

02

Outreach programme

Researched outreach and first conversations for an agreed list over a fixed period.

03

Managed department

Ongoing partner sourcing, onboarding and management on a monthly retainer.

Fees depend on partner types, markets and the size of the target list, and are agreed after discovery.

Questions

Questions about business development.

If your question isn't here, email us. Partner programmes vary a lot by market.

What's the difference between business development and sales?

Sales closes direct deals with customers. Business development builds relationships with partners who sell, refer or integrate on your behalf, so the value arrives through someone else's customers.

What kinds of partners can you help us find?

Resellers and distributors, referral partners, agencies, technology and integration partners, and marketplaces. The partner type is chosen against your model during discovery.

Do you negotiate or sign partner agreements for us?

No. We run research, outreach and early conversations under messaging you approve. Terms and signatures stay with your team.

Can business development be done remotely?

Yes. Research, outreach and partner management happen online, and meetings are held by video. Trade shows and in-person visits aren't part of the service.

How long before partnerships produce results?

Partner cycles are long. Qualified conversations come first, signed partners later, and partner-sourced revenue after onboarding. Timing depends heavily on your market, so milestones are agreed together rather than promised.

How do you avoid conflict between partners and our sales team?

By agreeing deal registration and rules of engagement with your sales team before partners go live, and tracking registrations in your CRM.

Do you support partners after they sign?

Yes. Onboarding packs, training coordination, deal registration administration and regular pipeline reviews are part of partner management.

What do you need from us to start?

Product knowledge, your partner terms or a decision-maker who can set them, CRM access and a mailbox for outreach.

Next step

Give your partner programme an owner.

Tell us which partners you want and what's been tried so far. We'll start by defining the profile and mapping who fits.
